Sorting out the terms
The roof edge has parts with names, and knowing them helps you read a quote. The fascia is the flat board facing you at the edge of the roof. The soffit is the horizontal surface tucked beneath the overhang. The eave is the part of the roof that hangs out past the house.Knowing the words is not a requirement, but it makes the quote readable. When somebody says the channel mounts under the soffit, you know exactly what they mean.
Why the track mounts at that line
Permanent lighting runs along the roof edge and the eaves because that line solves several problems at once. The eave runs the full width of the house, so a run there has length to work with. It is high enough to throw light down the wall, and the overhang shelters the hardware.
The direction the light points
The channel can mount up under the soffit or out on the fascia, and that decision changes the effect. Tucked underneath, the light falls down the elevation. On the face, the effect is a bright edge. Neither is automatically better, and the answer depends on your roof and your goal.Where the channel sits decides the reach down the wall, and that turns out to matter more than the brand of the hardware.
Not every house is straightforward
Not every roof has a generous overhang. A deep overhang shelters the hardware well and lets you tuck the channel out of sight, though it can shadow the surface you wanted lit. A shallow one leaves less to hide behind and changes where the channel has to sit. None of it can

Beyond the holidays
A lit eave line is genuinely useful after dark. The practical version is finding your keys at the door, which is not a small thing in February. A house with a lit edge reads as occupied and cared for.
Gutters, roofs and the order of operations
A lot of things compete for that line: gutters, guards, flashing, and now a lighting channel. Any planned roof work belongs in the first conversation. Doing it backwards costs a second visit. It is a five second question that saves a real headache.
Two story houses have two eave lines
A single story house has one line to consider. A two story has a choice to make. The upper roofline is the line that reads from furthest away, since it sits against open air. The lower run is the functional one. Running both is common, and it can be phased.
